Tuscia
This is the Latin name for the Etruscan area that is defined by the Tiber and Fiorai rivers and the coast of the Maremma. It corresponds with the southern area of the Regio VII – Etruria as defined by Augustus.
The official name Tuscia is from the time of Diocletian but was used most of all at the height of the Middle Ages when the dioceses of Blera and Sutri were at the centre of the papal dominance of the area which was known as the Patrimonium Beati Petri in Tuscia.
During the Lombard occupation the area was divided into: Tuscia Romanorum and Tuscia Longobardorum. The border ran from the mouth of the Mignone and reached the Tiber, following the borders that separated the Lombard diocese of Tuscania from the Byzantine diocese of Blera.
Now Tuscia is the name given to the Province of Viterbo.
